For three actors, the Tony Award nomination announcement last week was somewhat bittersweet.

Sweet, because they’d each gotten a prestigious nod. Bitter, because their shows were long gone.

“It’s frustrating to all of us,” said Keith Carradine, nominated for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical for “Hands on a Hardbody,” which closed faster than any other new musical this season.

His show, based on a cult documentary about an endurance contest at a Texas car dealership, had a book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Doug Wright and songs by Phish lead singer Trey Anastasio and stage veteran Amanda Green.

But despite that exciting pedigree, the musical lasted only 56 performances, although it earned three Tony nominations, including one for best original score.

“The bottom line is: We had the life that we had. It was an exquisite, bright, brief existence,” said Carradine. “I felt as though we did everything right creatively. It’s just the marketplace is so unfathomable.”

“I’m pretty stoked, man! I got a call from my agent a little before nine a.m. with the news. I was not expecting this, so I was pretty stunned. I’m up in Connecticut with family, and [have been] taking care of the mundane aspects of domestic life and responding to people who’ve been reaching out with congratulations. It’s a bittersweet, wonderful thing. I’m so proud of the show we all did, and honored to be now representing our show, along with Keala and Trey and Amanda. I couldn’t feel more proud of what we all did, and everyone with whom I worked. It’s a great honor, and a wonderful thing to feel that we got noticed.”

“I’m pretty excited! I really didn’t expect this - I’m on cloud nine right now! I think we did an amazing show filled with gifted people and I’m honestly stunned to be recognized individually. I’m so proud of what we did and just honored to represent the show along with Keala [Settle] and Trey [Anastasio] and Amanda [Green]. I’ve been celebrating all day while dealing with the mundane aspects of domestic life here in Connecticut. We might be celebrating with some friends tonight!”

“I’m pretty gobsmacked, I’ll tell you. I’m flabbergasted! I’m just so overjoyed that our show got noticed. When I found out, I walked downstairs and my wife was in the kitchen. I raised my hand up for her to give me a high five, and she didn’t know what I was talking about. So I said, ‘Honey, I got a Tony nomination,’ and she jumped into my arms. She’s so excited for me. I heard from Martha [Plimpton] and all my kids. It’s been a great day, I have to say. When I was nominated for The Will Rogers Follies in 1991, it was the kind of role that people predicted would get a Tony nomination. There are certain roles that generate that kind of response. But [JD Drew] wasn’t that kind of part—it’s not flashy. So I’m really stunned. I’m up here with my family in Connecticut and we’ve just been enjoying the day. I might have a finger of my favorite single malt scotch to celebrate and leave it at that.”

Then I heard my friends in the house SCREAMING “KEALA GET UP!!!!!” I COULDN’T BELIEVE IT! And then I found out that Keith was nominated along with Amanda and Trey and I REALLY got excited!!! Okay, so it’s time for another State of the Keith.

Unfortunately, there isn’t too much to mention this time around. Hands on a Hardbody has finished up on Broadway. The cast recorded their album yesterday, but weirdly Keith wasn’t in any of the photos… I can’t believe they could do it without him, so presumably he’s doing his recording on another day, or was there but just didn’t appear in the photos. Hmm.

On a happier note, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints will be shown at Cannes and then get a US release on August 16.

…and that’s apparently it for the moment.

(Hey, at least Hands closing frees him up to appear in the Dexter finale, right? Right?)
